CAMPING and 4WDing
CAMPING and 4WDing
OK folks
As an avid camper and forby trekker, I was wondering where you have been and in what rigs, that you may wish to recommend to other members.
To kick things off, we did the Border Track near Pinaroo back in October.
Good fun running up and down the sandhills in various 4WDs. Some made it easier than others, but all got there in the end.
The second section heading toward Bordetown was much scarier.
There are some clay bog holes deeper than a Nissan Patrol full of sloppy goo to negotiate. We did a few of the shallower ones (busted up a few nuts and bolt, flaps and bumpers - nothing too serious) and chickened out on the deeper ones (no shame there if you respect your rig). Only had the snatchy strap out once and that could have been avoided if the rescuee hadn't changed his mind on his line out of a bog.
However, it was an adventure. Serious car cleaning required thereafter, however.
Watched one bloke get sideways on a big rut and burnt out 4th and reverse rocking back and forth trying to get it out.
Worth a look if you're into a bit of 4wding.
Pretty good camping spots around Ngarkat too.
Not one of the more popular parks, but interesting landscape just for its harshness.

Re: CAMPING and 4WDing
Isn't it good to see people actually using their 4 wheel drives for what they are meant for.

Not if you saw the way the bloke burnt out his 2 gears on the 'Cruiser.
Reckon that was a testosterone / beer fueled frenzy urged on by a group of mates who make it hard for others to enjoy such pastimes.

Re: CAMPING and 4WDing
Anyone got a tooled up forby out there?
What is it?
Only done some basic mods on my Gu6 Nissan Patrol.
Snorkel, Bull bar, dual batteries, tow pack and driving lights.
Going to get an extra bash plate under the front soon.
Need some further funds from the finance department, to get a 2" suspension raise and just maybe diff locks.
I can tell you there is a serious adrenalin rush plunging into a deepish bog wondering whether the truck will keep going. After a few you get a feel for how it will respond, but you still get a rush all the same.
Do a lot of sand driving on the beach with the surf lifesaving club.
That usually presents a few challenges as the wind drift mounds up the soft sand at the ramp.
We have a standing rule that is the definition of a bogging (which heaps great shame upon the bogger). And that is, if you cannot move either forward or backward by yourself without the assistance of another vehicle or being pushed by others.
Usually happens to someone at least 3 or 4 times a season.
Not good form when you bog the club Hilux down at the water's edge getting the IRB (Rubber Ducky) onto a trailer. Especially when the tide is coming in fast. Very serious shame that. At least 5 or 6 pints required (for assisters) to even start to redeem oneself. Luckily not me!
However, a further 5 or 6 pints required when it becomes known you haven't even engaged 4wd yet! That was a bad day for the Surf Patrol Captain.

Reckon they probably look the same from the ones I've been in.
However, only if you're having a few solidity problems with the back door though!

Re: CAMPING and 4WDing
Mateys!
The camper trailer is looking very schmicko now with a new paint job (green to black), new carpet and a new gas bottle bracket.
It was looking a bit tired after 12 years of abuse, but now looks like a brand new one.
Looking forward to the next camping foray to Gleesons landing (bottom of Yorkes) at the end of next month.
- Some fishing
(apologies to Micky J as I'm not a fishermans's back door)
- some drinking and story telling with mates
- some surfing
- some crazy catch
- some drinking (sorry already mentioned that)
- some camp fire songs
- some 4wding
- some bob-sledding (on sand dunes)
- some drinking (oops - starting to get repetitive now)
- and maybe the odd trip to the pub - just to play darts!
All in all a very blokey trip (Dads 'n' Lads) doing what blokes do.
Roll on April.

Re: CAMPING and 4WDing
Chambo with all that drinking going on you won't have any time for fishing, surfing, singing or bob sledding.

Re: CAMPING and 4WDing
Got the 'Trol all kitted up now to tackle the world.
2" suspension lift, 3" exhaust (which I managed to bend recently
) and front Diff locks, the beast is unstoppable.......unless the handbrake says I have to stay home.
Fornt bash plate booked and UHF radio thereafter.
Just waiting for October to go trekking (reckon won't need to be booking an appointment at AAMI at this stage) and getting filthy.
Surely somebody out there has something on 4 wheels (drive) worthy of comment?

Re: CAMPING and 4WDing
There is a 4wd play track at Loveday in the Riverland.
Can seriously test yourself on all the different surfaces.
Just need to finish the mods to give myself half a chance.
A group of about 50 is heading up there on the next long weekend.
