Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Well after lending my support to the West Whyalla footy club the last couple of seasons...
...things have changed as I have put my name down to play with Souths in 2010.
Forum members will still be updated (if interested) however the bias will now be from a Demons point of view, not a Dragons.

Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Pre-season has been going since the middle of January up here with all clubs in full swing (many clubs can be seen running along the beach and up our Hummock Hill). Training has been hard slog and I'm finding that not playing football for 4 years hasn't been the smartest decision I've ever made. But we keep on going.
Roopena will be looking for back to back Premierships in 2010 with North and West in particular looking to challenge for the flag. Here at Souths, we are also hoping to mount a strong challenge and end years of disappointment in A Grade. Rumour is that we will have a pre-season comp featuring SAAFL side Walkerville in the next couple of weeks.
Another rumour is former Bloods player Nick Prokopec has signed with one of the Clare clubs in the NEFL for 2010 and won't be featuring in this year's WFL after topping the goal-kicking charts the last few years.
Those are the updates from up here.

Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Unfortunately Prokopec floundered at league level coming from Centrals he played a handful of games for Westies but wasn't quite up to it at this level. Playing in that league may be just his level.

Depends on how much money sponsors etc are pumping into the club I would think BK. North and West seem to be the popular clubs up here. I'm certainly not seeing any money!!

North Whyalla v South Whyalla
Friday April 9 Bennett Oval 8pm
The first round opener between North Whyalla and South Whyalla at Bennett Oval on Friday night, should be a thrilling game, setting the scene for a great season of football ahead.
Both clubs have lost important players from last season, none more important than "gun" full forward Nick Prokopec and centre half forward Ali Thomas (North), which will leave a gaping hole in their forward line.
South, has lost Dwayne Colson, Eddie Wilson and Guy Sultan from last year, but appear to have covered them better than their opponents, with recruits Brett McKerlie and Josh Scharenberg, along with returning players Jimmy Martin, Tyrone Miller and Kahran McKenzie.
New coach Travis Hole has worked on a new game plan for the Demons during the pre-season and would hope that his charges have got it under control and can play it well, getting it almost together in the first two games of the West End Cup.
Third year North Coach David "Freddy" Freeman, readily acknowledges that his charges took the foot off the pedal last season, but this pre-season has shown their hunger is back and will be accountable in all games.
Much will depend on who fills the forward position, with young gun Shaun Taylor a possibility, while Russell Tucker and Matt Quist will have to step up and take more responsibility, while their new recruit, big man Chris Tyrell will prove a handful for opposition rucks.
If South's early pre-season form is anything to go on, they will go into this game with plenty of confidence, while North will be trying a new game plan that will enable them to kick enough goals to win games consistently.
It should be an enthralling contest, with both teams evenly matched and the winner being the team that gets the early breaks.
New coach, better settled side, leads me to predict that South will win, but only narrowly, by five to 10 points in a very even and exciting game of football not to be missed.

Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Important match
SPIDER SAUNDERS

Central Whyalla v South Whyalla
Saturday, May 22
Memorial Oval 2.20pm
This is probably the most important game this season for both clubs.
In form South Whyalla should be just a little too strong for Central Whyalla.
It is a must win for the Demons if it wants to compete in the finals as it will draw level with Centrals on points.
Depending on the result of the Bays versus West game, Central could possibly end up either third or fourth on the ladder after the round.
After Central's great start to the season winning the first three games, it is now back in the pack and really struggling for form.
Central has injuries to star players and a suspension hurting them, and lacks depth of quality players to replace the team.
South, after an unsettling couple of weeks with players going missing, is more settled now and very capable of playing good football, that should see it make the finals.
Last week, Centrals were ordinary for three quarters against the Bays, but showed some form in the last quarter.
If it can carry on with that this week, South better be careful.
Centrals may regain Steven Coffey from injury this week, adding strength to the mid field.
Veterans Mark Turner, Phil Hillman and Adrian Huish are in great touch, showing the way to young players with experience at getting the hard ball.
South's Ryan Baker, after a slow start to the season by his standards, is now back to his old form, a worry to all opposition as skilful and dangerous.
Last week saw Brett McKerlie play across half back.
His combining with in form centre half back Mark Phillips and full back Matt Perry will make it hard for the Central forwards to get on top.
Star full forward Scott Collison will probably miss another week with his hamstring injury.
During the past weeks South's coach Travis Hole has tried former defender Steve Barford at full forward with a little success.
He is providing a target up front as he leads well and can take a strong mark.
Hole's only problem is his accuracy.
No doubt both coaches will be stressing to all players the importance of this game.
If all players come out in the right frame of mind, it should be a great spectacle for the expected big crowd.
With so much riding on the final result, it is hard to pick a winner.
But once again I will stick my neck out and select South to win an absolute thriller of a game, by the barest of margins 5 to 10 points.

Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
HTWWW, what sort of crowds do they get at these matches, are they well attended by the locals. Here in the city the amateur league competition is well supported, from A1 down to the lower levels.

Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Pretty comparable to Amateur crowds. Maybe the same as poor SANFL attendance (ie 1300-1500). Cars all over the place right around the 2 grounds plus probably 50-100 in the grandstand. Depends on the rivalry as well. Friday night seems to be the most popular.
