2010/2011 AUSTRALIAN BASEBALL LEAGUE

Series one, game one – Adelaide ETSA Bite v Melbourne Aces

MEDIA RELEASE

ADELAIDE LOOKING FOR FAST START

South Australia finished second in last season's Claxton Shield, after losing to Victoria in the grand final, which makes the opening round of the new Australian Baseball League and mouth-watering proposition, with Adelaide ETSA Bite playing the Melbourne Aces from tomorrow night.

The new look Bite will play under Norwood Oval's recently installed lights for a weekend of action, with game one commencing at 7pm Thursday, followed by game two on Friday and double-header action on Saturday.

Paul Mildren has been slated as the Bites' starting pitcher on Thursday, with a range of imports, experienced personal and exiting youngster making up Adelaide's roster.

Make sure to get out to Norwood Oval for an entertaining experience while also helping create the type of atmosphere Adelaide sports lovers are famous for.

Adelaide ETSA Bite opens the season with a series against Melbourne Aces at Coopers Stadium, Norwood this Thursday at 7pm, with games to follow on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm and 7pm).

Tickets can be purchased through the website www.adelaidebite.com.au or at the gates prior to the game.

Final Scores - Game 1:

Adelaide Bite - 9 (including 4 runs scored in the 4th inning)

Melbourne Aces - 1 (lots of field errors resulted in Adelaide runs)

Great effort by Paul Mildren to pitch the opening 7 innings without conceding any runs...

Perfect start by the Adelaide side, well done lads...

Official crowd at Norwood Oval tonight was 1,749 which isn't too bad, hoping for much more tomorrow night and Saturday for the double header...

Press release from Adelaide's first up win....

Robert Laidlaw wrote:

BITE PUT ON MELBOURNE

Adelaide ETSA Bite began the new Australian Baseball League season off in style with a strong 9-1 victory over Melbourne Aces at Norwood Oval last night (Thursday).

With solid starting pitching from Paul Mildren and a complete batting display, the Bite looks like it will be a contender in the inaugural ABL season.

Mildren threw seven innings, giving up six hits and no runs, while striking out five batters in a dominant outing, justifying his selection for the opener.

Adelaide scored its first run in the second inning, after Mathew Smith walked, advance to second on an error and came home on Brandon Bantz' single.

An explosion of runs in the fourth inning saw the Bite take control of the game, as Dan Wilson and Bantz walked, James McOwen laid down a perfect bunt, Jeremy Cresswell knocked in two runs with a single, and Ben Wigmore plated the fourth with his second hit of the night.

After Adelaide scored single runs in the sixth and seventh frames, Melbourne finally scored in the eighth, when Andrew Russell's hit set up the Aces run, which came home on a double play.

Wigmore put the icing on his four-hit performance with a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

Game two starts at 7pm tonight, with a double-header on Saturday, from 4pm with the night cap at 7pm.

Adelaide 0 1 0 4 0 1 1 2 x - 9

Melbourne 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 - 1

Hits: Melbourne – Russell 2, Ijyiun 2, Wearne, Davies, Karlsen, Hashimoto;

Adelaide – Wigmore 4 (hr), Bantz 2, Cresswell 2, Latimore 2, McOwen, Wilson.

WP: P. Mildren; LP: A. Blackley.

Good to see a baseball comp back in Australia. Let's hope it catches on a little and more decent crowds come over time.

The ABL should be pleased about such a tight and enjoyable competition. I certainly have enjoyed hearing about it and watching highlights on the news. Well done to the baseball community. Very Happy
