Whyalla Soccer Association

Post by howthewestwaswon on Tue 22 Feb 2011, 9:55 pm

Yours truly is pleased to announce that I have been appointed Senior A Grade Coach of the Whyalla Wanderers Soccer Club for 2011. Shocked

There is no pressure to add to our tally of one flag (won in 1966) but I look forward to the challenge of lifting the club off the bottom of the table for the first time in 4-5 years... pale Laughing Laughing Laughing

Wish me luck.

I wouldn't mind Kevin in our team. Very Happy Wink Wink

There are 5 teams in our A and B Grade Comp - Wanderers, Lions, Steel United, Westlands United and Croatia. Croatia and Westlands are usually the top 2.

3 more are added in our Over 35s - Whyalla Town, Shadwell Town and Club Italico.

The Charity Shield - the WSA's season opener - was played on Saturday night between Croatia and Lions. Croatia ran out convincing winners with a score of 10-2, however, in fairness to Lions - their team was mainly their B graders and a few U/17s so perhaps not a truly reflective score.

Wanderers' season kicks off on the 20th March against Lions away from home in the League Cup.

League Pre-Season Cup began this weekend with PLENTY of goals, unfortunately none for my side as we were hammered 6-0 today... Shocked Embarassed No

I learnt that clearly my side either still have a heap of work to do on the training track or are finding it difficult to replicate what is being taught on the field.

Results:
Wanderers 0-6 Lions
Westlands United 7-7 Steel United
Croatia BYE

Two games and 20 goals scored, exciting stuff. Beats the boring nil all draws you often see in soccer.

17th April - Wanderers vs Steel United:
A Grade 0-4
B Grade 0-6

The league season proper begins in 2 weeks. I'm not liking our chances for anything at this stage. There'll be no surprises either for the optimists!

Rounds 3, 4, 5 & 6 - WSA League:
B Grade: 2-3 vs Croatia, 4-0 vs Steel United (1st WIN), BYE, 3-4 vs Lions (after being 3-0 up at H/T!)
A Grade: 1-5 va Croatia, 3-3 vs Steel United, BYE, 3-1 vs Lions (1st WIN)

A relatively successful campaign so far with some disappointments but after being wooden spooners for a couple of years with an average losing margin of 5-6 goals, their is optimism around the Wanderers Club that we ain't the easybeats anymore. Very Happy

Recent Results:
B Grade: 0-7 vs Westlands, 0-6 vs Steel United, 0-4 vs Lions
A Grade: 0-6 vs Westlands, 0-5 vs Steel United, 0-3 vs Lions

Have not scored a goal in 3 games now which is bloody frustrating. What's worse is many of my players have decided that their going to be comfortable reverting back to their old ways and receive a caning each week...

Do you get a full compliment of players out this time of the season or have they started to drop off as the season progresses ?

Nah, no drop offs really. Just some shift work getting in the way from time to time.

Unfortunately, as I've discovered in the last few weeks, I'm feeling a lack of trust from many of the older senior players and apparently I'm too radical in my thinking.

What pissed me off most on the weekend is that the A Grade were 0-3 down and half-time and all the players came to the huddle saying "Hey, we're playing well. We can get back in it." etc etc. I must have been watching a different game, because I was pissed as hell. My reply was, "Well, if we're doing so ******* well, why are we 0-3 down after 45 minutes??" and I gave the the public bollocking of a life time. Whilst it worked for most of them, a couple defied team orders and I dragged them. A few heated words we're exchanged. I left the arena about 15 min into the 2nd half...

Sorry I had to vent. It's still pissing me off 24 hours later.
