AFL Reserves Plan in the WAFL Rejected
Good to see that this stupid idea has been knocked on the head - think round 2 is not to far away though!
Reserves plan bad for WAFL
14/Jun/2011
TWO weeks ago, Trevor Nisbett and Steve Rosich, chief executives of the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers, presented their proposal to enter reserves teams in the WAFL competition from season 2012 onwards.
There is no doubt that the two AFL clubs went to great expense to produce a 52-page glossy booklet which in their opinion addressed the concerns put up by the WAFL clubs during their reconnaissance mission in April.
What the AFL clubs failed to do, however, was to include an experienced WAFL club administrator in their research team to verify the facts, figures and opinions that many of their conclusions were based on.
Put simply, only someone who has spent considerable time at the coalface of running a WAFL club would be able to accurately assess the impact the inclusion of two stand-alone AFL reserves teams would have on the WAFL competition and the structures below it.
The proposal did not mention the impact on the other levels of football – community, amateur, country and junior football did not rate a mention.
For those who have taken the time to download and read the proposal, available on the WAFL website, you will see there is a guaranteed annual average payment to each WAFL club of $63,800, and an additional variable upside payment of $61,163, totalling $124,963.
The latter figure has been touted about media circles, however in South Fremantle’s case, there would be no upside payments at all due to fixturing and the loss of one traditional derby each year.
In a nutshell, the submission is beneficial for the two AFL clubs but not worth changing the face of WAFL football to achieve their aims.
