Rd 23 WAFL
Today top side Claremont disposed of last place Peel to the tune of 93pts, West Perth beat my beloved Swannies at Bassendean by 39pts to sew up 2nd spot and a semi v Claremont at Claremont in 2 weeks (WP have the bye next week), $ubiaco beat East Fremantle by 38pts and for the 25th time out of the past 26 ! to move to third and Perth beat East Perth by 16pts.
This sets up a mouth watering elimination clash next week in rd 24 with the Derby South Fremantle v East Fremantle at Fremantle oval. The winner will finish 4th and play $ubi in the first semi the week after. The clash should attract 12 to 15,000 fans.
Other possible but remote possibilities are Sth Freo and East Freo drawing and Peel upsetting $ubiaco, this would put EF and SF in a first semi and tip $ubi out of the finals which i would love to happen.
The race for the bottom 3 spots are also on in earnest with Swans playing Perth and East Perth facing Claremont, Peel are almost assured the spoon unless they upset $ubi at home, which leaves Swans and East Perth fighting for 7th and 8th..Perth can finish no higher or lower than 6th

Swandog, you keep putting a $ in Subiaco, is there something going on over there we don't know about? Something a little sneaky perhaps?

Asked him about it last week.
Apparently they have an issue over there with LARGE BROWN PAPER BAGS that you can only get from under tables.

Re: Rd 23 WAFL
For only the 6th time since the introduction of the page system in 1931 this weekend will have the 4th and 5th sides playing off to decide who stays in the finals. The last time was in 1983 when EF beat EP to get a spot. The other years were in 1945, 1958,1961,1964. % wasnt a factor in those years.
The only other times something similar has occured was in 1947 and 1980 when then 5th placed sides had to beat the 4th placed sides by a certain amount to get in on %.
1980 was WP needing to win by 54 but only won by 30 and East Perth in 1947 v Perth when EP won by 3pts but needed to win by 4 or 5 goals.
In the 1980 game its folklore now that East Perth sang their song loud and proud even though they lost by 5 goals to their archrival.
How often has this happened in the SANFL?
