Sturt 2012

Post by Ben W on Wed 28 Dec 2011, 11:45 pm

Courtesy of "Spelly" I was able to get the following average crowd attendance figures,

2008: 3451
2009: 3310
2010: 3189
2011: 2631

As you can see there is a trend downwards in attendances.

This season I fear could be a worse outcome as the night footy matches at Adelaide will not be happening and Sturt at this stage appear to not have organised a night game at a night venue to replace those lost. Night matches are proven to attract far larger crowds as people involved in the Amateur league and so on are able to come. In Sturts case many from the Goodwood Saints are able to participate that otherwise could not.

I would hope that if asked at the AGM the President of the SFC would have a good reason as to why they were unable to secure a venue for some night games and to explain to the members what plans are in place to increase the home match attendance figure? One hopes that plans are in place and action is in fact being taken over it. With the European debt crisis and the Global problems in general leading most football clubs to lesser sponsorship and re-negotiated packages there is not a massive amount of meat left on the bone to trim for any of our SANFL clubs. Increasing attendances is one quick way to put money into the club which would not doubt be appreciated by any club. Yet I do think its reasonable for the lesser attendance figure to be commented on by the board at the AGM along with plans to increase it. One would hope that is the attitude and not an attitude of burying heads in the sand and hoping there is enough funds around to keep things running for another season.

The SANFL is unfortunately full of bandwagon supporters who will only come out when the sun is shining.

Sturt will see this number increase when they win more games. Have they not secured more games at Unley Oval in 2012 or have I made that up? scratch

Yes we have 10 games at Unley this year which is an increase .Not sure about those figures though and exactly what they represent but I do know membership has been increasing ??

I think Sturt haven't had a home game in Round 1 for a long time, due to the Council lease?

This time they have a crowd-drawing Round 1 game at home against Port and 10 home games. I doubt they would have asked for many night games. Where would the have played them and would they get a reasonable return at a neutral venue?

You would expect any club that finishes bottom of the table to have a crowd drop off, no difference from any other club.

Have Sturt played a night home game at Norwood or have I just made that up? scratch

My mail was that Sturt were in negotiations with West Adelaide to use Richmond Oval for at least one night game this season, I am not sure why it fell over though, as the deal was supposed to have been better than what was offered at the Parade?
