Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Here's some info from fullpointsfooty.net:
WEST WHYALLA FOOTBALL CLUB
Formed: 1945
Colours: Green and gold
Emblem: Dragons
Senior WFL Premierships: 1957-8-9-60, 1963, 1967, 1969-70-1-2-3, 1976, 1983, 1998, 2005 (15 total)
Whyalla News Medallists: Tony Houden 1944; Jack Wallis 1947; Dave Woodard 1951; Dennis Donovan 1965; Trevor Selby 1968; Charlie Agett 1969; Glenn Summerton 1972; Peter McInerney 1974; Noel Stuart 1983; Andrew Gardiner 1987,1989, 1993; Andrew Manfield 1997 & 2000 (11 Medallists/14 Medals)
West Whyalla Football Club has a history littered with memorable achievements and notable personalities. Admitted to the WFL in 1945, the club had to wait until 1957 for its first senior flag, but has made up for lost time since. Captain-coached by 'The General', John McInerney, Wests won their first four premierships in succession and enjoyed an overall success rate during that phase of 90.6%.
McInerney again coached West, this time in an off-field capacity, between 1966 and 1975, during which time he oversaw a further six premiership wins, including a then record five in a row between 1969 and 1973. With an overall record of ten flags from thirteen seasons as a senior coach, small wonder John McInerney earned the selectors' nod as captain-coach of the official WFL 'Team of the Century', which was named in 2001. John's sons Kevin, Peter and Mark all followed in dad's footsteps by playing with distinction for the Dragons, while Peter went one step further and enjoyed a fine SANFL career with Glenelg that included 2 state games.
West Whyalla have been a force to be reckoned with in recent seasons, winning the 2005 premiership, and topping the ladder after the minor round the following year only to bow out of contention in 'straight sets' at the hands of Central Whyalla and Roopena. The 2008 season brought another grand final, but North Whyalla proved marginally too strong, claiming a hard fought victory by 9 points after the Dragons had enjoyed a 13 point advantage at the final change.

Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
I was told for a period, the Whyalla Football League was the best comp in the state of SA, outside the SANFL, producing champions like Neil Kerley, Barrie Robran, Graham Cornes, Don Hewett, Darrol Foote, Peter McInerney and a few others. Currently Levi Greenwood, who is on North Melbourne's AFL list, is a Whyalla boy.
Between 1966 and 1968 the South Whyalla Demons were captain-coached by another man with a Glenelg connection in Harry Kernahan, who steered the side to the 1968 flag.

Re: WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
TOUGH BATTLE AHEAD: The strength of the Whyalla Football League will be put to the ultimate test in the Mortlock Shield at Port Lincoln this weekend.
Because Whyalla finished in fifth place at last year's Mortlock Shield, they have drawn to play two of the carnival's heavy weights in Great Flinders and Mid West.
Both of these associations have won the Mortlock Shield numerous time and will head into this year's event as favourites.
It will be Whyalla's third attempt at winning the shield, having had limited success.
David 'Freddy' Freeman will debut as Whyalla's Mortlock Shield coach this year and is expecting a big improvement.
Freeman took over coaching North Whyalla for the 2008 season taking them from bottom in 2007 to top in 2008.
"I expect to be competitive, in the past Whyalla has been a bit disappointing," he said.
"With some shortened games we will have to take a reasonably quick side."
Having held several training sessions, Freeman said the team was fast becoming a solid unit.
"The boys have really worked well together," he said.
"They have put their team loyalties aside."
In the past Whyalla has struggled to field its strongest side.
This year more players have put their hand up, however due to work commitments some certain starters will be missing.
The squad chosen has a good mixture of young players and a few experienced ones that are all in good form.
In previous years the heavy Centenary Oval in Port Lincoln has seen Whyalla perform well in the first game, but struggle in the latter ones.
This year the selectors are hoping to overcome this by choosing a few younger stars that are all good runners like Lee Ringland, Scott Norman, Matthew Holmes, Ryan Burgess, Geoff Appleton, Anthony Malcolm, Luke Seymour, Josh Ackland and Alistair Thomas.
Meanwhile the experience of Ryan Baker, Simon Nowak, Ray McIntosh, Shannon Winders, Waylon Nielsen, Greg Fiebig, Michael Kellett, Justin Grund and Nathan Wohling should see us in with a good chance.
The rucks will be in good hands with Ben English sharing the duties with Grund, who is probably in the best form of his career.
The defence will be led by the Aaron Smith, Chris Beaty, Nathan Wohling, Phil Hillman, Matthew Perry and Johnathon Kroll can fill a spot on the last line of defence, while the experienced Michael Kellett, Ryan Baker, James Vanhoof, Simon Nowak and Greg Fiebig will vie for places in the midfield.
The forwards are all in good form and kicking a lot of goals.
Shannon Winders, Andrew Hoffman, Anthony Malcolm, Damien Hanneman, Alistair Thomas, Reggie Reid and Matthew Holmes are all capable of doing a very good job.
On reflection the squad chosen is well balanced with youth, experience and pace.
Much of our success will depend on how the defenders and mid fielders can deliver into the forward line, so that our forwards get plenty of shots on goal.
Shannon Winders can kick plenty of goals as he is currently second in the leading goal kickers with 35 goals, while Anthony Malcolm, Andrew Hoffman, James Vanhoof and Michael Kellett all know where the goals are.
