Weeroona Bay lives to fight another day
30 Aug, 2010 11:30 PM

Weeroona Bay kept its season alive on Saturday night.
The Tigers defeated Central Whyalla by 12 points in the thrilling cut throat first semi final.

Centrals' poor goal kicking cost the team dearly in similar fashion to last week's game.

The game began in ideal conditions and an even first quarter.

But the Roosters were wasteful with the ball, especially in front of goal.

The Tigers held a slender three point lead at the first break scores being 2.3 to 1.6.

The game was close and looked like being a thriller.

The Tigers started to get on top during the second quarter and extended their lead to 15 points, scores at 5.5 to 2.8.

But once again poor finishing was costing the Roosters dearly.

Both teams had 10 scoring shots, with the Bays holding the upper hand.

But the Roosters were still very much in the game.

In the third quarter the Bays were out to show they meant business by extending their lead even further.

The Roosters had plenty of the play, but like the first two quarters, poor finishing was costing them and could see their season slipping away.

Weeroona Bay stretched its lead out to 25 points, scores at 8.5 to 3.10.

Once again Centrals had the same number of scoring shots, but not much success on the scoreboard.

The Bays were playing better football, but had trouble killing off the Roosters who 'hunging in there'.

Central played its best football of the match in the last quarter and stormed home to outscore the Bays, 4.2 to 2.1.

But it was all too late, going down by 12 points with a final score of 10.6 to 7.12.

The Bays got a bit of a fright and will need to show an improved performance next week to keep their dream of playing off in this year's grand final.

Once again Josh Parker showed how important he is to the Bays, playing his usual great game, with his long kicking into the forward line a treat to watch.

Geoff Appleton was a focal point and finished with two goals.

Defender Byron Taylor, Daniel Colson, Anthony How and James Gruitt were others to play well.

Centrals' bests were Daniel Sims who always picks up plenty of possessions and rarely wastes any of them, with others Dwayne Colson, Adrian Huish, Aaron Byles and Matt Grantham.

Weeroona Bay lives to fight another day and will need to be at its best for next week's preliminary final against West, which should be a great game.

Central was disappointed in losing on Saturday, but can reflect on its improved season, especially after the bad two seasons gone and with a little more luck, could have gone further.

A CLOSE WIN

01 Sep, 2010 11:30 PM
Simon Nowak is the winner of the 2010 Whyalla News Football Medal for the best and fairest player in Whyalla Football League.

The young West Whyalla footballer also won the award as the best player aged under 21 years in the A grade competition.

Accepting the medal, Nowak paid tribute to those he had surpassed in votes to win the medal.

"There was a lot of good players in contention here tonight," Nowak said.

"Thanks to Westies for taking me in when I moved here."

In particular he singled out Whyalla football stalwart Russell Sawford as being "like a father figure" to him.

"He just helped me get settled in to the club and the town," Nowak said.

"He helped me to meet a lot of people.

"When it comes to football - he is the man."

He said the highlight of his football career to date was "definitely winning the medal".

"To put my name up with some of the people that have won it previously."

Nowak said one of the biggest thrills of winning the Whyalla News medal was being ranked along side past medallists such as Sawford and West Whyalla player Anthony Manfield.

Whyalla Football League senior coach Mark Azzopardi paid tribute to Nowak's skills when he presented him with that award.

"Simon has been involved in our combined side," Azzopardi said.

"He can play forward - he can play back - he can go in to ruck."

Azzopardi said that versatility was important in today's football.

Nowak said his preferred position was centre half back, although he started this season in centre half forward and then went into ruck.

The 6'2" player previously played for former Port Augusta club Wolves, then Central Augusta in the Spencer Gulf Football League.

He also spent three years playing under 17 then under 19 football for North Adelaide, however he did both hamstrings in his final year there.

He broke a thumb just before finals in 2009 but has been injury free this year, allowing him to poll 20 votes to win the medal by a narrow margin.

Runner-up Michael Geddes polled 19, with Shannon Winders and Josh Parker both gaining 15 votes, although Parker was ineligible to win.

Nowak moved to Whyalla three years ago to start an apprenticeship with OneSteel.

He said competition had been strong this year and matches between West and preliminary final opponents Weeroona Bay were even.

"It was a great tussle all year," Nowak said.

Although Nowak has won a couple of premierships as a junior player at Port Augusta he is still waiting for that elusive senior flag.

He also believed that he still had a lot to learn about football.

"I know as a player I still have a way to go."

Well, tomorrow is the big day up here in Whyalla. The Grand Final between Roopena and Weeroona Bay. I'd have my money on Roopena - attempting to win back-to-back flags, however the 3 games between these clubs have been very close all year. Personally, going to watch is going to be interesting as I have workmates that suit up for Roopena and play basketball with some Weeroona Bay boys, including the captain.

4 grades of footy to be played on the ground before the A Grade match (U/12s, U/14s, U/17s and B Grade - 1st game starting at 8:45am). I would think the ground would be "broken in" by the start of the main game!

It may be the last Whyalla League post we will have on here after the Grand Final as I may be moving towns for work next year. To those who bother to read my posts, thanks for making it a little worthwhile. Very Happy

Roos belt insipid Tigers

Roopena secured its eighth premiership in an easy 94 point win against Weeroona Bay in front of a large and colourful crowd on Saturday.

The Bays put in a disapointing effort and was never in the game after a fairly even first quarter.

The Bays only scored two goals after the first quarter and never scored a goal for more than a quarter and a half.

The game began in good conditions with the Bays getting off to a flyer, kicking the first goal to midfielder James Gruitt.

Roopena scored next with a goal to James Van Hoof and even at this early stage, it was looking like a good contest.

Jason Perkins goaled, followed by Luke Sandland, which put the Roos at a 14 point lead.

The Bays got one back from its captain Johnathon Kroll, but this was quickly negated by another right on the siren from Robert Gill, with Roopena going into the first break 14 point leaders, scores being 4.4 to 2.2.

The rest of the game was all one way traffic as Roopena quickly put the issue beyond doubt kicking 6.1for the quarter.

Roopena held the Bays to only four points to go into the long break 47 points ahead.

Roopena was much more assured with its ball skills, hardly making any mistakes.

The Bays fumbled the ball and missed the mark most of the time, putting the players under enormous pressure.

It didn't get any better for the Bays, as Roopena goaled directly from the restart and kicked two more before the Bays kicked its first since just before quarter time, much to the delight of the large crowd.

Roopena continued to press on for victory and was in no mood for letting the Bays get back in the game, holding a match winning 58 point lead at the last break, scores being 13.8 to 3.10.

At this point, it was just a matter of how much Roopena would win by, with the large crowd disappointed with the Bays' poor effort.

The further the game went, the worse it got for the Bays.

With only about five minutes left two Bay players were sent off for being foolish, which was a sad way to end the game.

There were no passengers at all for the Roos, with ruckman Bernie Kelly winning the medal for best player in the final.

Others who stamped their authority on the game were Jason Perkins, Greg Fiebig, Nick Warren, Peter Usher and Jeff Ewings.

But you could have easily picked another five or six, such was the Roos domination.

The Bays' best was Geoff Appleton, who never gave up trying all game, Byron Taylor, Tom Colson, James Gruitt and Chris Mills.

It was a disappointing end to a good season of football.

The Bays would have to rethink their attitude throughout a long summer to once again gain respect from the football public.

For Roopena, it was a great way to finish off a very good season for the club.

The burning question is can they keep this high standard up?

Born and bred in Whyalla but been living in Melbourne for 20 years. Played for the mighty Roosters (but not so mighty at the moment!) as a junior. Just discovered ths forum and will check it out next season for sure. I had heard that someone got a serious facial injury from the "foolishness" and thought it was a slack way of reporting it.

Yeah I heard that there was a fractured jaw or cheekbone in the incident. I thought the player who caused it should have been named and shamed.

Well I moved up to Whyalla a few years ago. Tried playing with Westies and South but not finding footy (the playing side of it) my thing at the moment. A few work mates up here all play for Roos and are trying to get me over there. I think I'm going to give it a miss though. Too much basketball on my plate!

I try to keep this post updated as much as I can and more than likely this time from a neutral perspective. Very Happy
