Jack Oatey

Post by Firstblood on Wed 09 Sep 2009, 5:27 pm

Jack Oatey is one of the most revered figures of South Australian football. His coaching record is unmatched in the state.
Post-war, he guided Norwood to three premierships as captain coach, playing alongside great players such as Doug Olds, John Marriott, Peter Dalwood and Sam Gallagher.
These certainly were salad days for the Redlegs and they were the most
successful club ever at that point in time.
In the late 50's, Oatey coached West Adelaide to regular finals football. Indeed, they sufferedgrand final heartache two years in succession. With players such asNeil Kerley, Doug Thomas, Jeff Bray and Magarey Medallist Ron Benton,Westies enjoyed a golden period.
The year after Oatey left, the Bloods finally went top.
In 1962 Oatey took on the lowly Sturt side, who had rarely played finals football since World War II. Within a few seasons he had guided the Double Blues into the grand final. This was immediately followed by their golden era where they won five straight premierships from 1966 to 1970. Further premierships followed in 1974 and 1976.
Superb skill was the hallmark of Oatey sides; he was famous for having players footpass through barrels. Stars who came to prominence under his tutelage included Rick Davies, Paul Bagshaw and Mick Nunan - a handy first ruck if ever there was one.
Oatey's sons Robert and Peter both played for Norwood, with Robert later transferring to Sturt and playing in a premiership side under his father's coaching.

A teacher I think and a great manager of men with the ability to understand human behaviour. Put simply way ahead of his time. Some of Oateys tactics still used today.
