Bruce Light

One for the Burgerking.

Bruce Light was an explosive wingman for Port Adelaide in the 60's and 70's.

Light's career began in 1967 and he soon became a Magpie favourite with his pace and aggressive attack on the ball. He was a feisty customer who had the ability to raise the ire of opposition supporters.

A State player in the early 70's, Light retired in 1978 after over 150 games. He is the uncle of current day Crow Mark Ricciuto. 1

Was a quick bloke.
Have the 1976 GF on DVD and with the blonde locks flowing, he even looked faster.

Would have been an interesting race off with Vivian and the Flash Graham.

There is a photo of Light in the Waikerie pub along with a number of other well known sporting locals.

Ricciuto of course and Rick Darling (Test cricketer) who I didn't know came from the Riverland.

I played cricket against him once back in the mid-90s in the One Day Adelaide Turf Comp.

Kensington lined up with a team of stars, 4 of which had had state or test (Darling) experience. We had them 6 down and they had to get 90 in 13 overs. We thought we were a reasonable chance.

Only problem was that we hadn't seen Darling bat yet.
Well our opening bowler thought he would intimidate Darling by bowling him bouncers. After retrieving about 5 balls from the tennis courts, I said to our man, if it goes in there again, you can run after it and get it your fkn self.

Darling (primarily) got the runs with about 4 overs left. Game over.

I used to open the batting and the thing that struck me the most about him, was just how bloody quick he was in the covers. He almost anticipated where the ball was going from the type of delivery the bowler tossed down. Had me second guessing runs that would have normally been easy singles.

Sam Parkinson (ex state player) was a funny character. He opened the bowling (no warm up required) and sent down the first 2 deliveries which didn't hit the pitch at all and dribbled down to the third slip.

Bit of a delay in the game at that point whilst everyone in the Kensington side picked themselves up off the turf after keeling over p*ssing themselves laughing.

Was hard facing up to the third delivery for fear I was going to fall over laughing before it got to me, but thankfully Parko hit the pitch.

Was a fun game played in great spirit.

Apologies that this little anecdote has nothing to do with Bruce Light, unfortunately. Maybe Rick knew Bruce, they wouldn't have been too different in ages.
